PBS, Michael Pollan, Botany of Desire, M&M Heath Farms, Hooray for Ladybugs

Last night I caught the tail end of a great program on KCET - the LA PBS affiliate. The program was Botany of Desire, based off the Michael Pollan book. I am a huge MP fan and his simple yet so sensical (is this a word) philosophies on healthy eating, growing, etc. The program discussed many important topics including; conventional v organic farming, and monoculture v whatever is the opposite.
Profiled is M&M Heath Farms, an organic farm in Idaho. This is a wise farmer, not only because he does not use chemicals but he does not practice monoculture, instead he grows 16 kinds of organic potatoes. This allows him to protect himself should a crop become infested from a bug, spore, etc. And by using ladybugs instead of chemicals in the end he makes more revenue per acre than those farmers using nasty chemicals!

Way to go smarty pants!

Negative Nancy

That's right, I am a negative nancy today. I am sick of PR firms that 'specialize in GREEN' but have no GREEN clients!! Companies that advertise a 50% off sale and all they did is take the sale prices down from the day before. This bugs me to no avail along with all Natural High Fructose Corn Syrup.

On a more positive note - when you sign up for the Crop Share California $2 from each order goes to development of school gardens and nutrition programs. Have you seen what those kids get for their breakfast and lunch at school???? Please sign up!!!

Redo

My intention was to write about Maura Peters Organic Salvage Candle line. But she does not have photos, the candle or any info about the candle on the website. The candle holder is a recycled bottle and they smell fantastic! PS I bought this candle FTC!!!

So, Instead I'll share that I am going to meet Scott Schuman and have him sign my book this afternoon! How exciting! When I first created this blog years ago, he was immediately placed on my list of favorites! thesartorialist.blogspot.com - Image above is from Scott's site

Corporate GREED continues....

When the govt gave tons of taxpayer money to GS and others, this is the exact reason they should have retained more control of the checks and balances within each corporation....http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/107974/bonuses-put-goldman-in-public-relations-bind?mod=career-salary_negotiation

The Kaiser talks Organic Farming....

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfield, who presented his spring-summer collection in a mock barn at Paris Fashion Week yesterday. "I hear all this talk about organic farming, and the environment and things, and I'm all for it," Lagerfeld says. "But there must be a certain sophistication."

Tom Binns not TOMS

Not Toms but Tom Binns....It just kills me that Tom Binns has a studio a few blocks, YES BLOCKS away and I can't see it. No open studios, no evening salons, no reply to my email request, nada! And even if he doesn't want to be, He is eco, since he reuses, takes the old and makes something new. Long before Subversive and all the others came along, mind you....

On a totally unrelated note, the peanut butter my dog smeared all over his dog bed when eating a bone stuffed with pb now looks like smeared poop. I don't want to look at it & I am too lazy to wash the bed.

The Huntington

Words can not describe how beautiful this estate, gardens, galleries, lawns are....http://www.huntington.org/ And might I say what a smart move on my part to go yesterday when the winds were howling on the westside. It was an absolutely stunning day there! My only regret was that I did not get there earlier.

An Education

Last night I attended the premiere of An Education, the film adaption of the Nick Hornby book, held at the Egyptian Theater in the Hollyhood. I am not a professional film critic, then again who really is - Ben Lyons? I mean you don't get accredited to review films. Anyways, back to the subject.... It was a sweet film, with a well studded cast. Each time I thought it would have a predictable next step it surprised me.
ps - Nick is speaking for free at the Skirball next week. There still may be tickets available if you are interested - www.skirball.org
