PBS, Michael Pollan, Botany of Desire, M&M Heath Farms, Hooray for Ladybugs

Last night I caught the tail end of a great program on KCET - the LA PBS affiliate. The program was Botany of Desire, based off the Michael Pollan book. I am a huge MP fan and his simple yet so sensical (is this a word) philosophies on healthy eating, growing, etc. The program discussed many important topics including; conventional v organic farming, and monoculture v whatever is the opposite.
Profiled is M&M Heath Farms, an organic farm in Idaho. This is a wise farmer, not only because he does not use chemicals but he does not practice monoculture, instead he grows 16 kinds of organic potatoes. This allows him to protect himself should a crop become infested from a bug, spore, etc. And by using ladybugs instead of chemicals in the end he makes more revenue per acre than those farmers using nasty chemicals!

Way to go smarty pants!

Negative Nancy

That's right, I am a negative nancy today. I am sick of PR firms that 'specialize in GREEN' but have no GREEN clients!! Companies that advertise a 50% off sale and all they did is take the sale prices down from the day before. This bugs me to no avail along with all Natural High Fructose Corn Syrup.

On a more positive note - when you sign up for the Crop Share California $2 from each order goes to development of school gardens and nutrition programs. Have you seen what those kids get for their breakfast and lunch at school???? Please sign up!!!

Redo

My intention was to write about Maura Peters Organic Salvage Candle line. But she does not have photos, the candle or any info about the candle on the website. The candle holder is a recycled bottle and they smell fantastic! PS I bought this candle FTC!!!

So, Instead I'll share that I am going to meet Scott Schuman and have him sign my book this afternoon! How exciting! When I first created this blog years ago, he was immediately placed on my list of favorites! thesartorialist.blogspot.com - Image above is from Scott's site

Corporate GREED continues....

When the govt gave tons of taxpayer money to GS and others, this is the exact reason they should have retained more control of the checks and balances within each corporation....http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/107974/bonuses-put-goldman-in-public-relations-bind?mod=career-salary_negotiation

The Kaiser talks Organic Farming....

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfield, who presented his spring-summer collection in a mock barn at Paris Fashion Week yesterday. "I hear all this talk about organic farming, and the environment and things, and I'm all for it," Lagerfeld says. "But there must be a certain sophistication."

Tom Binns not TOMS

Not Toms but Tom Binns....It just kills me that Tom Binns has a studio a few blocks, YES BLOCKS away and I can't see it. No open studios, no evening salons, no reply to my email request, nada! And even if he doesn't want to be, He is eco, since he reuses, takes the old and makes something new. Long before Subversive and all the others came along, mind you....

On a totally unrelated note, the peanut butter my dog smeared all over his dog bed when eating a bone stuffed with pb now looks like smeared poop. I don't want to look at it & I am too lazy to wash the bed.

The Huntington

Words can not describe how beautiful this estate, gardens, galleries, lawns are....http://www.huntington.org/ And might I say what a smart move on my part to go yesterday when the winds were howling on the westside. It was an absolutely stunning day there! My only regret was that I did not get there earlier.

An Education

Last night I attended the premiere of An Education, the film adaption of the Nick Hornby book, held at the Egyptian Theater in the Hollyhood. I am not a professional film critic, then again who really is - Ben Lyons? I mean you don't get accredited to review films. Anyways, back to the subject.... It was a sweet film, with a well studded cast. Each time I thought it would have a predictable next step it surprised me.
ps - Nick is speaking for free at the Skirball next week. There still may be tickets available if you are interested - www.skirball.org

WHP

If anyone happens to be looking for me tonight....Artist Alexandra Grant and designer Mike Niemann discuss their collaboration on the Love House with Edgar Arceneaux, Director of Watts House Project (WHP). Grant conceived of the Love House--placing a sculpture of the word love on the roof of the Cerant family home of 107th Street--as a lightning rod to draw attention and reseources to the community across from the Watts Towers in South Los Angeles. Watts House Project is an artist-driven, collaborative redevelopment project between residents, artists, and architects to find creative solutions to everyday problems facing the Watts Towers community.

Slacking

I have been slacking on the blogging for sure....Last night I went to the Judith Lieber store opening. It's not really my style but my friend, the founder of The PR firm, Company Agenda was out running the show so I had to swing on through. Of course, I am a big supporter of all things eco and organic but I also like sustainable design. This means a shoe, bag, piece of jewelry, coat, etc that you will wear for years and years, it has a timeless style. Well, I never thought I would find a JL bag that caught my eye. Surprisingly enough I found a handful last night. Here a pair that I found just gorgeous and could be your go-to evening bag forever!!!!

Fall Equinox

I guess if I was going to miss something about living in Colorado (besides my friends of course!) it is the wildflowers in the summer and the Aspens turning in the fall. If you never seen the aspen groves turn gold its a must do! Especially in Aspen!

Photo is not retouched - the sky really gets that blue and the leaves that brilliant!

PS - as I sit at my desk and type in a tank top and jeans while it's snowing in Boulder can't say I am missing the leaves all that much ;o)

Ughh

It's really been an effort to come up with any today....I know Fall is in the air. For me, its not so much the cooler temps but the short days always kill me.

However, if this dress + belt were in my closet I would be excited for Fall. This model has a knockout figure but I am optimistic that the ruching would be flattering on most figures!!!

***Note - this post is from yesterday. For some reason IE was not allowing me to add an image to my blog post, instead it was hanging up computer completely****

****Note II - if you are the person who continues to send a comment in chinese, PLEASE stop. I will continue to reject it. I have no idea if it is a virus or what it says so neither will my readers***

Clare Vivier part Deux

Not a day goes by while carrying my Clare Vivier clutch that someone stops me to ask the who? where? and how much? While its not my design I can compliment myself to have the fortitude to purchase. Or in this case purchase a few, as the price point is so reasonable! With each interaction a little part of me rejoices that, as with all of the gorgeous creations in her collection, they are created with fabric remnants. So when its gone, its gone.

But no have no fear, Clare has a few new creations up her sleeve - including the Flat work Tote shown above. Visit her website - http://www.seevivier.com/ and create a little bag envy with your own friends & family....
