Leaf Freak

I luv tea & I am the BIGGEST sucker for packaging. I recently discovered Leaf teas. They offers all the above ++++, 100% natural teas and they give back 10% of the profits to the workers at tea gardens. I have not tried the tea (so no comments on the taste) but I am highly tempted...

Good Bros & Bags

So you can't swap endless cases of beers for one of these babies (click here for story) and Freitag bags are nothing new. But these two brothers (what it is with these creative, eco, entrepreneurial pairs - see my previous post on Mio) make rad bags & there's a new model - 'the Leland.'

If you are not familiar with Freitag - they are bags made from discarded bike inner tubes, seat belts, used airbags and truck tarpaulins.

Organic Data

Good growth indicators but no category has yet reached 10%, head to our local Whole Foods on a Sat or Sun afternoon (or most any evening) these stats seems most impossible. Then again, Boulder most definitely does not reflect any national standard or average.

Locavore

There is an article in Ad Age (click here) about the locavore movement and how big brands are scrambling to catch up, as usual...

It includes an interesting stat, albeit very outdated...
Every $100 spent at a local firm leaves $68 in the Chicago economy, compared with just $43 when $100 is spent at a chain store, according to the Andersonville Study of Retail Economics, published in October 2004. The study also found that for every square foot occupied by a local store, the economic impact topped $170, compared with $105 for a chain store.

All serving as a good reminder to visit the Farmers Market tonite!

Circle of Poop

We now have worm poop producing plant food - see Terracycle. Although Scotts-Miracle Grow is fighting it every step of the way. Get over it Scotts!! Read more about the suit here

And Elephant Poop used for beautiful paper products with profits funneled back to protect those lovely Elephants. See Elephant Dung Paper for products and more info...
When is someone going to come up with a use for all the dog poopy stagnating away in plastic baggies?

Venice Beach

I know am in the minority but I love LA. There are nooks and crannies all over the city that go against all the knee jerk stereotype of LA (you know it!!).

Great places like the Getty and areas like Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice where the shop and building owners strive to keep chains off the street (hello pearl street when did you sell out…) even though it grows like crazy.
It was recently uncovered that one of the building owners in AB is set to lease to a Pinkberry shop (for those of you not familiar with pb it's disgusting, totally faux yogurt chain that has replaced the ginormous Starbucks cup as the hit accessory and diet supplement on the virtually non-existent arms of celebrities in LA).
And it is causing quite the ruckus! Read a bit here
So now that I have sold you on a trip to LA (haha) - visit Abbot Kinney & go to Jin Patisserie - the most amazzzing and elegant sweets! A serene little shop set back off the main blvd. I mean check out this pasteries, they are works of art....

Consumed with Murketing and Andy Warhol

If you follow the Consumed column by R.Walker in the NY Times Magazine I highly encourage you to visit his blog Murketing.

He recently linked to this Andy Warhol clip on youtube (click here) to view.
Since I was a kid I have loved Andy's work and think he was a flipping genius! I had pictures of his art plastered all over my room in high school. Read all the bios of him, Edie, etc...
Here's a work of Andy's with a Boulder connection and that's all I will say....

Water Watch

Dow teamed up with National Geographic magazine to create this map - Water Watch. The map shows the amount of safe water in the world, how quickly it's disappearing and what the future holds. It's an interesting site/map/whatever and worth visting.
Of course Dow omitted how much water is no longer 'safe' because they already polluted it. HEY, it's my blog I can say what I want.

100% Looolo

100% Lovely.
I have not experienced the loveliness of these textiles first-hand but I have read so much about them I was compelled to share. And everyone can appreciate the beauty not only of their products but their commitment via this post.
Looolo - The name "LoooLo" is a visual representation of "100%", symbolizing our commitment to every aspect of the design process – from making the choice to use organic materials during development to consideration of the environmental footprint our products leave at the end of their useful lives. Since the textile industry is one of the largest known environmental polluters, we want to address this in order to affect global change.

Philly Boys

I am crushing on these brothers in Philly; artistic. eco-conscious and entrepreneurial. Jaime and Issac Salm - the founders of Mio

In 2001 Mio originated with the with the objective of combining business rigor with environmentally and socially progressive design. Mission accomplished - lots of stars for you!

Example one - Bendant Lamp created from a single piece of recycled steel powder coated, flat packed. You receive, open and customize. All for around $150! Genius, great colors and styley.

Example two - SoftBowls made from 100% wool. Yes the bowls, are great looking but it doesn't end there. The brothers decide to partner with one of the last remaining millineries in the US. It gives the millinery some opportunity to diversify their business and hopefully stick around for years to come. Plus the production is low energy intensive as most of work to produce the bowls is via people power + steam.
