Weekend

I'm off to Scottsdale for the weekend - :O)!
If I were staying in LA for the weekend I would be sure to catch David LaChapelle ++ others at the Honor Fraser Gallery on Sat
Pop Art and Ethics 2pm Moderated by Ed Schad, the panel discussion includes Irving Blum, David LaChapelle, Holly Myers and Catherine Taft in a dialogue about the ethics of pop art, and the ways in which this style of working walks the boundary between being a constructive critique of social culture and a spectacle in itself.
and the Wool and the Gang event at the New High Mart. I've been thinking about purchasing one of their kits for a verrryyy long time!
Stay warm and dry!

Science As a Contact Sport

Gosh, I am so delayed in mentioning this, it is embarrassing. OVER a month ago I was invited to Laurie David's house for a little meet and greet with the amazing and so interesting (this says a lot coming from a non-science person like me) with Dr Stephen Schneider, in conjunction with the release of his new book - Science As a Contact Sport. I was honored to be invited, and the Dr talked a bit about global warming and lots of science but boy did he capture my attention. Usually anything sciencey has the Charlie Brown's teacher effect on me - wawah, you know the sound ;o) - get the book and check it out for yaself.

3.1 & The Costume Council

Thanks to the LACMA Costume Council for allowing me to attend the Phillip Lim talk and video presentation (spring '10) Between...Romance and Realism. As if I did not already love the 3.1 Line listening to Phillip, his approach to design and his take on clothes makes me heart him even more!
The Costume Council has an incredible line-up of events - for more info costumecouncil@lacma.org

Must Do!

After a whirlwind trip to DC, up to Philly and back I had a moment to taken in some of DC's finest - including the Corcoran! Lucky for me the Edward Burtynsky exhibit was still up. I missed it when I was last out in Oct. The photos are spectacular!!!! So clear, so concise, you can't tell if they are real or a little CG. The photo above is not my fav - that would be Oil Refinery #3 - sounds kinda odd to say an oil refinery is my fav shot.
Go see for yaself

I went...

....and it was awesome! Alice Waters at Dosa. Alice and her Chez Panisse team came down from SF, hit the Santa Monica and Hollywood Farmers markets and made an amazzzinggg spread! OMG - the food was incredible, the space was beautiful and then Alice spoke for about an hour. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon....

PBS, Michael Pollan, Botany of Desire, M&M Heath Farms, Hooray for Ladybugs

Last night I caught the tail end of a great program on KCET - the LA PBS affiliate. The program was Botany of Desire, based off the Michael Pollan book. I am a huge MP fan and his simple yet so sensical (is this a word) philosophies on healthy eating, growing, etc. The program discussed many important topics including; conventional v organic farming, and monoculture v whatever is the opposite.
Profiled is M&M Heath Farms, an organic farm in Idaho. This is a wise farmer, not only because he does not use chemicals but he does not practice monoculture, instead he grows 16 kinds of organic potatoes. This allows him to protect himself should a crop become infested from a bug, spore, etc. And by using ladybugs instead of chemicals in the end he makes more revenue per acre than those farmers using nasty chemicals!

Way to go smarty pants!

Negative Nancy

That's right, I am a negative nancy today. I am sick of PR firms that 'specialize in GREEN' but have no GREEN clients!! Companies that advertise a 50% off sale and all they did is take the sale prices down from the day before. This bugs me to no avail along with all Natural High Fructose Corn Syrup.

On a more positive note - when you sign up for the Crop Share California $2 from each order goes to development of school gardens and nutrition programs. Have you seen what those kids get for their breakfast and lunch at school???? Please sign up!!!

So, Instead I'll share that I am going to meet Scott Schuman and have him sign my book this afternoon! How exciting! When I first created this blog years ago, he was immediately placed on my list of favorites! thesartorialist.blogspot.com - Image above is from Scott's site

When the govt gave tons of taxpayer money to GS and others, this is the exact reason they should have retained more control of the checks and balances within each corporation....http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/107974/bonuses-put-goldman-in-public-relations-bind?mod=career-salary_negotiation
